Unique Spanish Basque Brunch at Huertas in the East Village

I completely ignored the opening of Huertas in the East Village when I first heard about it. All too frequently I find myself disappointed by tapas joints, so I often don't bother to give them a chance. But, then I read a glowing write-up from my most trusted food writer – Robert Sietsema that made me completely reconsider. My tastes pretty much always fall directly in line with his, so I knew that if he loved the place, I was probably gonna love it too.

Awesome, My Mouth Went Numb at Lers Ros Thai in SF

DSC_3738_editI might be a little sadistic when it comes to spicy foods. I love consuming them, but I also love watching my friends squirm eating them. Among the many spicy cuisines out there, I'm particularly fond of authentically hot Thai food, although my body usually disagrees with that decision within a few hours of the meal.In NYC, I've often found it hard to find Thai restaurants outside of Queens that will take a white guy seriously with regards to flavors and spice levels. I often find myself let down by the mild and watered down dishes served to me and if I really want it made right, I have to be very insistent that I know what I'm getting myself into. This is definitely not the case at the San Francisco mini-chain Lers Ros Thai. Everything on their menu is very authentically prepared, spice level included.

The “Best Damn Crab Cioppino” at Sotto Mare in North Beach

Cioppino. Say it with me: CHEE-oh-PEE-no. Just as I was, you're probably wondering what on earth that could be. I really don't know how it happened, but somehow I had been blissfully unaware of this San Franciscan specialty until a friend insisted we go to Sotto Mare in San Francisco's Little Italy, North Beach. He had been before and desperately wanted to once again experience the local dish that he'd been dreaming of since he first tasted it a few years prior.

Strong Cocktails and Amazing Bar Snacks at YOLO in Fort Lauderdale

DSC_3235_editFort Lauderdale is a funny place. On one hand it's the place where everyone's Jewish Grandma goes when the Tristate weather is too cold and on the other hand it's a beachy, party-your-face-off Spring Break destination with a clubby nightlife scene. And yet somehow it works as both simultaneously. This visit happened to coincide with most college Spring Breaks, but that wasn't the reason I was in town. I was actually coming for a relaxing weekend, to lounge on the beach with my girlfriend and family and have a quick visit with Grandma. But, as you already know, no matter where I am, I'm going to seek out great food and this trip was no exception. So on Saturday night we headed to the downtown Las Olas strip to a loungey bar restaurant that was seriously called, wait for it, YOLO.

An Incredible Lunch Special with Super Fresh Sashimi at Tomoe Sushi

DSC_2197_editSushi is one of those things that nearly all New Yorkers love. There's such a vast difference in quality between the cheap stuff and the expensive stuff that it's often hard to find really great, fresh sushi without feeling like you won't be able to pay your rent. If you want impeccably prepared fish without breaking the bank, look no further than Tomoe Sushi on Thompson Street in Greenwich Village.

Finding the Best Conch in Turks & Caicos

This vacation couldn't have come at a better time. As the entire country fell into a below-zero deep freeze, I was headed for some sun and heat in Turks & Caicos with my girlfriend Amy and her family.

Day 1:

We were staying at the beautiful Grace Bay Club, right on the incredible beach in Providenciales, Turk & Caicos. Upon arrival, we immediately hit the gym to preempt the impending bodily destruction. I had two missions on this trip. 1) To return with the tan of a golden god. 2) To eat as much conch – the local shellfish specialty – in as many ways as humanly possible.
